Item 1 of 1

September is a significant month in terms of raising cancer awareness, educating about cancer and conducting cancer research. This month focuses on various aspects related to cancer, including childhood cancer, blood cancer, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer, as well as the important role of cancer research in preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer.

Cancer is one of the diseases which affect millions of people around the globe and may influence patients’ lives in various ways. Although cancer is a very complicated disease group, its greater awareness may help people learn about its risks and persistent changes in their health. Cancer Awareness Month is a time to go further than just raising awareness and to make steps to get the right information.

What It Is and Why Its Awareness is Important?

Cancer arises when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer has various types, and all of them vary in the factors that cause them, their signs and methods of treatment.

A healthy lifestyle can play an important role in reducing the risk of several types of cancer. They include avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, following a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Certain cancers can be avoided through vaccinations like HPV and hepatitis B.

However, there are some cancers which can’t be avoided. Hence awareness about cancer is important .

Childhood Cancer Awareness: Spreading Awareness, Inspiring Hope

September is declared as the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, raising awareness about cancers that affect children and teenagers.

Childhood cancers are easy to recognize in nature compared to many adult cancers. They include leukaemia, brain tumour and other solid tumors. But on the other hand, lymphoma, bone cancer and thyroid cancer may develop over a period of time, especially amongst teenagers.

The majority of cancers in childhood are not recognized, making prevention difficult. Hence, awareness, early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial in such cases.

Parents play an important role in assessing children’s health.Parents should be aware of any consistent or unusual changes in a child’s health. Some of the symptoms may be unexplained weight loss, fever lasting for more than a week, persistent headache, bone pain, abnormal bruising or bleeding or even unusual lumps.

It should be stressed, however, that these symptoms do not necessarily indicate cancer development. In fact, they may occur due to other conditions, but in case of concerns, it is necessary to consult a medical professional.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month raises our awareness about the necessity for all children to receive timely and proper treatment and care.

Awareness of Blood Cancers: The Various Kinds

This September also offers a chance to spread awareness of blood cancers, which involve the blood, bone marrow or cells of the immune system.

The main types of blood cancer are leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. While they are categorized as “blood cancers,” these diseases are actually very different and need to be diagnosed and treated individually.

Some of the common symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Frequent infections
  • Bruises and unexplained bleeding
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Bone pain

However, these symptoms can also be connected with many other health issues, so one should never diagnose themselves based on them. If they continue, it is important to see a healthcare professional.

Blood Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that it is important  to support patients and their families during the diagnostic process, as well as during the treatment and recovery period. The treatment options for blood cancers have become much more diverse thanks to advances in cancer treatment, such as immunotherapy and stem-cell transplants.

Lymphoma Awareness: What to Look For

In this September month, lymphoma awareness is one of the important aspects of blood cancer.

Lymphoma is a form of cancer that starts from lymphocytes, a specific type of white blood cells responsible for supporting the body’s immune system.

Two major types of lymphomas are Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Each type has its own subtypes.

Symptoms of lymphoma may include:

  • Painless swelling of lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Itchiness

All of the above symptoms can have a different range and causes which aren’t associated with lymphoma. But in case anyone experiences any of those symptoms regularly, it would be essential to consult your doctor.

Lymphoma awareness is also about being aware of the patient experience. Cancer affects not only one’s physical state but also their daily life, making medical, emotional and practical support an essential part of the journey through cancer.

Awareness About Thyroid Cancer:

Additionally, September is also known as Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month.

Thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland situated in the front part of the neck. This gland produces hormones, which regulate certain processes in the body.

Symptoms that require medical attention include:

  • A lump or a swollen area in the neck
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Breathing problems
  • Changes in the voice

It should be noted that these symptoms are not always associated with thyroid cancer and can be due to some other diseases. A doctor will decide whether an additional examination is needed.

Thyroid cancer awareness is also aimed at promoting proper diagnosis and right healthcare choices. Not all thyroid disorders need cancer treatment. Sometimes tests may find thyroid tumors that could never cause any problems for a person.

Therefore, thyroid cancer awareness encourages everyone to consult a doctor, but does not promote self-diagnosis and additional testing.

Cancer Research: Preparing for a Brighter Tomorrow

Awareness about cancer is associated with cancer research. During September, it is possible to raise awareness regarding the significance of research in understanding, preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer.

Cancer research allows scientists and healthcare professionals to gain more knowledge about cancer development and progression. Additionally, it plays an important role in improving the methods of detection, diagnostics, and treatment.

Many developments have been made in research areas such as targeted therapy, immunotherapy, precision medicine, and diagnostics.

Cancer research is a collaborative effort of researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. The joint efforts allow converting the findings of the research into prevention and treatment of cancer.

Cancer Prevention and Early Detection: How to Help Yourself?

As cancer prevention and early detection methods vary depending on the type of cancer, there are a number of measures that can promote good health.

Embrace a Healthier Way of Living which can include:

Eliminating smoking, being physically active, keeping a healthy weight and having a balanced diet can decrease the risk of some types of cancers.

Understand Your Body Better :

Knowing what is normal in your body and recognizing any changes will help you determine when to see a doctor.

Do Not Overlook Any Symptoms:

Unusual symptoms, including but not limited to persistent lumps, abnormal bleeding, prolonged fever or unexpected weight loss, should be consulted with a healthcare practitioner.

Practice Evidence-Informed Healthcare:

Recommendations regarding cancer testing and diagnosis vary from person to person based on age, personal or family history and other factors. Consult with a qualified healthcare provider.

Making Cancer Awareness Matter

Cancer Awareness Month goes beyond campaigning and wearing ribbons. It offers an opportunity to learn, engage in informed conversations, and support those who are affected by cancer.

Whether it is childhood cancer awareness, blood cancer awareness, and lymphoma awareness, thyroid cancer awareness, or even increasing the focus on cancer research, September helps to remind us that every element of the cancer experience is crucial.

Awareness can help individuals to spot signs of changes in themselves, seek medical guidance, and recognize the value of evidence-based medicine. Research can go on to increase the knowledge we have about cancer and contribute to improved methods for its prevention, detection, and treatment.
