OVERVIEW
Dr Lakshmi Lingam is a well-known researcher in women’s studies, a gender expert, teacher, researcher, administrator, and trainer. Prior to joining as a Chair Professor (2024) at the School of Public Health, D Y Patil University, Dr Lakshmi worked at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for 35 years. At the time of retirement in 2023, Dr Lakshmi was the Dean & Professor at the School of Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS). She was the first Deputy Director (Pro-VC) who set up TISS off-campus in Hyderabad. Dr Lakshmi is recipient of Fulbright fellowships during 2004-5 (Fulbright New Century Scholar) and 2015 (Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Award).
RESEARCH
Dr Lakshmi Lingam has received her doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1988. Dr Lakshmi has extensive research experience and numerous publications on gender issues. She has guided over 45 research dissertations of students MA, MPhil and PhD at the TISS. She has undertaken several projects funded by Indian (ICSSR, ICMR, Ministry of Women & Child Development) and international agencies/bodies (UNICEF, UN Women, UNDP, World Bank, ILO, Bill & Melinda Gates, Ford Foundation, DFID, UKERI, British Council, IDRC, US Consulate, Fulbright and Facebook). One of the recent research project is funded by the WHO-TDR on Climate Change and Infectious Diseases.
Dr Lakshmi has published books, chapters in books and several research papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals. Dr Lakshmi is a peer reviewer for several international journals and grant making organisations.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Dr Lakshmi is on the Governing Board of reputed Indian Universities and women’s organisations. Is an Independent Director of Timken, India. In her professional capacity, Dr Lakshmi consulted for the UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women, World Bank, ILO, DFID, Action Aid, Ministry of Rural Development, Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
