About the
Program

The Master of Architecture in Climate Change and Sustainability offered by D Y PATIL DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE is an innovative and timely initiative that reflects the vision of the university to create future-ready architects and urban professionals.

Underpinned by concepts of sustainability, resilience, and climate-responsive design, the program develops more proficient problem solvers who can mitigate climate change-driven challenges in the urban environment. The school’s commitment to innovation and scientific research, and multidisciplinary learning offers the best possible environment to nurture leaders for shaping the

built environment of the future.

Accelerated Urbanization and Climate Change are bringing along a set of dual challenges to cities; this includes not only mitigating their contribution to climate change but also ensuring that they are adapted to its inevitable consequences. This master’s program bridges that gap by training students on knowledge and tools for designing net-zero, climate-resilient buildings and urban spaces. It enables incorporation of fundamental principles of building science, decarbonization, environmental impact evaluation, and sustainability reporting, ensuring that the graduates possess expertise in both current and forthcoming methodologies.

This program cultivates expertise in net-zero and climate-resilient architecture, urban resilience planning, and the crucial intersection of environmental policy and social equity.  Graduates will be uniquely positioned to address the multifaceted challenges of sustainable urban development. The core curriculum focuses on designing energy-efficient, net-zero buildings.  This involves a deep understanding of advanced building science, encompassing everything from passive design strategies to the integration of renewable energy technologies like photovoltaic systems and geothermal heat pumps.  Consider, for instance, the often-overlooked impact of embodied carbon – the emissions associated with material production and transportation – which this program directly addresses through the specification of low-carbon materials and construction methods.  This holistic approach ensures a

comprehensive reduction in the building’s overall carbon footprint, extending beyond mere operational energy efficiency.

Furthermore, the program integrates environmental policy and corporate sustainability. Students will gain a working knowledge of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) frameworks, a crucial element for responsible investment and corporate accountability. They will master the methodologies of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Life Cycle Analyses (LCAs), tools vital for evaluating the environmental performance of projects throughout their entire lifespan. The ability to produce comprehensive sustainability reports, compliant with international standards, is another key skill developed within this program.

A critical aspect of this training is its emphasis on community engagement and social equity. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without considering the social implications of design decisions. Therefore, the program promotes collaborative problem-solving and participatory design processes, ensuring that solutions are inclusive and address the needs of vulnerable communities. This approach recognizes that equitable access to resources and opportunities is fundamental to achieving long-term sustainability. Finally, the program fosters a culture of research and innovation. Students are encouraged to engage in independent research projects, contributing to the advancement of sustainable design and climate-responsive urban planning. This commitment to original research ensures that graduates are not merely practitioners but also active contributors to the field’s ongoing evolution. The potential for groundbreaking innovations, particularly in areas like bio-based materials and smart city technologies, is significant and actively encouraged.
