About the
Programme

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a two-year, full-time postgraduate programme designed to develop skilled professionals capable of addressing complex public health challenges. Grounded in an interdisciplinary framework, the programme integrates epidemiology, health systems, social sciences, and policy with strong experiential learning through internships, fieldwork, and research projects. It equips students with analytical, technical, and leadership skills to design evidence-based interventions, strengthen health systems, and improve population health outcomes at local, national, and global levels.

Objective

The overall objective of the MPH programme is to develop and train competent and skilled public health professionals who are armed with problem solving capabilities and capacities along with critical thinking skills. The training provided during the program effectively addresses and meets the diverse public health needs of the country. Students enrolled in this programme rest on a solid foundation preparing them for careers across a prism of various sectors. These include academia, non-profit organisations, research institutions, local, national and international public health agencies as well as industry.

Duration & Pedagogy

Students at DYPSPH undergo two years of intensive graduate education focused on building proficiency in the realm of public health. The curriculum has been carefully designed to achieve academic excellence with strong theoretical foundation complemented by practical application. This 24-month full time programme offers rich experiential learning opportunities through interactive class discussions, internships, field assignments, and research projects. The school has established meaningful collaborations with various national and international healthcare organizations, schools of social sciences, and other public health institutes. These partnerships provide students with valuable exposure and help in creating a pool of competent and committed public health professionals. Students also have unique opportunities to participate in variety of student driven activities including student clubs, professional development events, hackathons, field trips, observing health days, editing a quarterly newsletter, cultural and sports fest. These activities enable the students to explore new areas of interest, develop leadership skills, enhance cultural sensitivity, and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Curriculum

The first year consists of courses designed to develop student competencies across twelve core areas of public health. The following are the mandated courses:

  • Principles of Epidemiology
  • Constitution of India: Democracy, Citizenship, Political Participation
  • Health Systems, Policy & Management
  • Introduction to Sociology & Behavioural Sciences
  • Foundations of Statistics
  • Foundations of Micro economics
  • Public Health Nutrition
  • Demography and Population Studies
  • Quantitative Research Methods
  • Fundamentals of Macro economics
  • Qualitative Research Methods
  • Climate Change & its Impact

The second year includes advance courses in the areas introduced in the first year, along with elective courses. Students are required to complete a minimum of two electives based on their area of interest. In addition, they must complete a capstone project and minimum two months of internship which involves mentored practical training under the guidance of seasoned public health professionals.

Another unique initiative that provides all students enrolled for the programme, access to the edX online portal that delivers a plethora of well curated courses offered by leading universities in the world. This aids in broadening their horizons as they are exposed to a global student community and learn from the perspectives shared by a larger group of experts from the field.

Key Features

Integrated MPH-PhD Options

The integrated MPH-PhD offers students the pathway to enhance and deepen their skills in public health research. Through additional research methodology courses and/or an advanced research project, students can seamlessly progress from a coursework-based master’s degree to PhD enrollment.

Industry relevant program

The program has been designed to align with real world public health practice offering multiple opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. A key component is the internship programme which provides hands one experience with organisations of public health repute across the country.

Eligibility Criteria

The course is open to candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university in India or abroad (with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade) as detailed below:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences / Professional degree in a health-related field
  • Bachelor’s degree (Non health Sciences) with proven experience in a health-related field.
